Open AmeriCorps Vista Position Announcement: Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Weeks Bay Reserve seeks a motivated person to fill its AmeriCorps VISTA South Alabama Environmental Issues service position. The Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is part of a national network of coastal reserves established as living laboratories for long-term scientific research and estuarine education. The Reserve was designated in 1986 and is managed as a cooperative partnership between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with additional support from the Weeks Bay Foundation and volunteers.
The Weeks Bay Reserve VISTA position will be based at the Reserve (11300 U.S. Highway 98) in Fairhope, Alabama and is administered by the Alabama Coastal Foundation. The selected VISTA member is required to attend a November 5-8 Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) session and will serve a 12 month term from November 9, 2013 to November 8, 2014. Upon successful completion of the program, the selected applicant will receive an End of Service Stipend of $1,500 or a $5,550 education award option.
The desired qualifications for this open position are as follows:
- Has a bachelor’s degree or demonstrated equivalent of related experience preferred in area of Biology, Environmental Science, Science Education, or Environmental Education.
- Possesses excellent communication (both verbal and written) skills.
- Has a desire to work with diverse audiences.
- Is willing to work outdoors, on a boat, and in difficult field conditions.
- Is self-motivated and able to work independently or with a team.
