On July 24th, the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) partnered with Weeks Bay NERR, Water Words that Work, and Leister Consulting Company to host a workshop to teach participants how to overcome language and cultural barriers when extending their environmental messages.
Participants were taught to simplify their message in English first, using the steps defined by Water Words that Work (1. Begin with Behavior, 2. Foolproof Photos, 3. Swap the Shoptalk, 4. Words that Work, 5. Tempting Testimonials, 6. Review Readability); how to reach your underserved audience (Use census data, direct marketing, and social media; and how to use translators and interpreters.
This workshop was a pilot that was developed for our stakeholders. We also held a workshop on July 16th at 5 Rivers- AL’s Delta Resource Center (Weeks Bay NERR will report that workshop to NOAA). Eric Eckl of Water Words that Work will be incorporating the feedback from our workshops and is planning to offer the workshop to other groups around the states.
