This week at Grand Bay:

5th – American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)

6th –Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger), Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea)

7th – Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina), Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea), Praying Mantis (Genus Stagmomantis)

8th– Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor), Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)

9th– Bobwhite Quail and 8 chicks (Colinus virginianus), Orange-Fringed Orchid blooming (Platanthera ciliaris)

We also had reports of a couple of West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) at the Bayou Heron boat launch Wednesday and Thursday. Minutes after the report came in on Thursday, our staff made a trip to the boat launch but were not able to find the manatees! They must have moved on in the bayou- they could have been just around the bend where we couldn’t see them!
